Lite-On had originally planned to begin volume production of 6x Blu-ray Disc Combo drives about now but have decided to postpone till the start until November.
The delay is because global demand for BD drives has been short of original expectations and PC vendors have asked Lite-On IT to cut its ODM/OEM quotes for 6x BD Combo drives, the company pointed out.
However, it is opportune to start volume production next month so as to catch the expected sales peak prior to the year-end shopping season, Lite-On IT said.
Currently in the Taiwan market, a BD Combo drive sells at about NT$6,000 ($186 / £106 / €137), lower than NT$12,000-13,000 for a BD burner but higher than NT$3,500-4,000 for a BD-ROM drive.
In related news, Pioneer will soon launch a new 6x BD burner in the China market at a recommended retail price of 2,999 yuan ($439 / £250 / €325), the industry sources indicated.
