Microsoft's HD DVD peripheral landed in 92,000 US homes since it was launched in November, but comparing its success to that of Sony's competing Blu-Ray is tough. Researchers at the NPD group tallied all sales for the add-on over the last two months of 2006.
With Sony's PS3 finding its way into nearly 687,300 homes, the Blu-Ray video standard has a huge numerical lead in the next-gen video war. Some are quick to point out that purchasers of Microsoft's offering confirmed their support of HD through the specific purchase of the device, while Sony's bundling of the Blu-Ray drive make it impossible to know how many of the nearly 700,000 purchasers were intentionally pursuing Blu-Ray.
If Microsoft's 2% HD attach rate for 360 owners is any indicator, one could assume that less than 14,000 PS3 owners are interested in upgrading their movie collections. Sadly, this assumption would be the insane guess of a crazy man and does nothing to paint a picture of how the real war will play out.
